Backend systems
My home turf. Production Rails applications, APIs, business logic, relational data, integrations, background jobs, tests and performance work.
I’m Muhammad Zain Ul Abidin — Zayn — a software engineer with 4+ years of production experience across Ruby on Rails, Python, AI systems, iOS, and DevOps.
I turn messy business problems into reliable products: backend platforms, asynchronous workflows, document intelligence, mobile experiences, payments, cloud deployments and the systems that keep all of it alive.
CLIENT REVIEWS
THE SHORT VERSION
My strongest base is backend engineering with Ruby on Rails and SQL. Around that core, I’ve expanded into Python automation, AI/document intelligence, iOS work, cloud operations and DevOps. I’m comfortable moving from code to infrastructure to production debugging when the problem demands it.
SELECTED WORK
Some production work is intentionally anonymized because client systems and source code are private. The engineering problems, responsibilities and technologies are real.
ENGINEERING SPECTRUM
My home turf. Production Rails applications, APIs, business logic, relational data, integrations, background jobs, tests and performance work.
Document intelligence that deals with ugly real-world inputs: OCR, extraction, normalization, validation, explicit failure handling and LLM-assisted workflows.
Hands-on iOS development broadened the way I think about software: product behavior, mobile UX, client-side constraints and the backend contracts mobile apps depend on.
I don’t stop at merge. I’ve worked with AWS/Linux infrastructure, deployments, monitoring, server administration and production troubleshooting.
EXPERIENCE
Building and maintaining production software across backend architecture, APIs, relational databases, background jobs, testing, third-party integrations, cloud infrastructure, deployments and live-system troubleshooting.
Delivered OCR and document-processing solutions that turn images and PDFs into structured information, with an emphasis on messy inputs, extraction reliability and practical automation.
Graduated Cum Laude, with multiple Dean’s List recognitions and a Fall 2021 Rector’s List distinction.
TOOLBOX
No fake percentage bars. The grouping reflects where my real experience is strongest.
HOW I ENGINEER
I care about why a feature exists, not just which ticket was assigned.
Logs, traces, database behavior and reproducible failures beat guessing.
If repetitive work can become a reliable workflow, I want to remove it from the human path.
An output that looks right is not necessarily right. Validate, constrain and handle failure explicitly.
BEYOND THE TERMINAL
When I’m not shipping or debugging software, I’m usually playing or listening to music, following football, or watching movies. Cinema is a genuine obsession — I love the craft, the stories, the performances and the ritual of seeing what filmmakers build next.
I like building things that people can actually use — and making them reliable enough that nobody has to think about the engineering underneath.— Zayn
LET’S BUILD SOMETHING SERIOUS
I’m open to software engineering opportunities worldwide and collaborations on ambitious products.
